Fire officials said a blaze that tore through a storage shed Tuesday in Brecknock Township was caused by the owner burning trash too close to the building.

Fanned by a light afternoon breeze, flames ignited piles of lumber inside the structure, Fivepointville Deputy Chief Glenn Mains said.

Mains said the building sustained little damage, but he said about $10,000 worth of lumber was destroyed.

"Because it was a steel structure, it held up pretty well," he said. "But it also held in the heat, which created some problems for us."

Mains said one firefighter was taken to an area hospital for treatment of heat exhaustion.

Heavy smoke and flames were roaring from the rear of the one-story structure when the first crews arrived at 379 Long Lane shortly before 2:30 p.m., Mains said.

Firefighters initially mounted an exterior attack but were able to move their efforts inside once the fire had been knocked down, he said.

Mains said the blaze was brought under control in about 30 minutes.
